Spring Fishing in Hokkaido – An Angler's Dream!
Spring fishing in Hokkaido is nothing short of epic! With an incredible variety of fish on offer, it's the perfect time to grab your gear and hit the water. As the snow melts, rivers become fishable, and Sakura Masu start appearing along the shorelines—ready to be targeted with lures as early as March!
Target Species – What’s Biting?
Hungry fish, that’s what! The Rainbows have finished spawning and are on the hunt, while the Browns are eager to feast after a long winter of minimal fly life and fry. Cool river temperatures keep the Iwana and White Spotted Char actively feeding, and you might even spot some Sakura Masu or sea-run Amemasu in the rivers. (Sakura Masu cannot be targetted in Freshwater and only in the sea)
And if you’re extra lucky? You might just stumble upon a rare Steelhead—though we won’t promise it!
When Can You Start River Fishing?
Timing depends on snow levels and where you are on the island, but here’s the scoop:
Mid-April: The fishing can be unbelievable, with fish feeding aggressively! Wading might be tricky due to fast-moving water, so take care.
Mid-May: Rivers are in prime condition, fish are active, and the fly life is buzzing. Get ready for some seriously crazy action!
What’s the Weather Like?
Spring in Hokkaido is magical—melting snow, blooming greenery, and bursts of life everywhere. But don’t let the beauty fool you; the weather can be unpredictable. One moment it’s sunny, the next it’s pouring rain. Pack for all conditions—blistering sunshine, sudden showers, and everything in between.
Best Fishing Methods – What Works?
Early spring means the fly life is still ramping up, so lures and streamer setups are your best bets. Big trout are ravenous and won’t hesitate to demolish smaller fish. Think fish imitations!
As temperatures rise, expect a surge in mayflies and caddis. Stay versatile—Hokkaido’s weather keeps you guessing, and so do the fish!
Can You Go Lake Fishing?
Absolutely YES! Spring lake fishing in Hokkaido is insane. Fish move from deeper waters to shallower edges, following smelt and other baitfish. With fly life starting to drop off the trees, the action can be nonstop. Don’t miss out!
More Than Just Fishing – What Else Is There?
Spring isn’t just about the fishing (though it’s pretty hard to beat). It’s also the season when Hokkaido bursts into life. From stunning coastlines to the iconic Sakura blooms starting in Hakodate and traveling north, the scenery is breathtaking.
